We are seeking an Animal Biologist to support the National Institutes of Health's (NIH), world renowned National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities

  • Perform experiments with animals, including but not limited to instrument preparation and sterilization, animal preparation, sterile and non-sterile scrub assistance for the support of aseptic surgeries of animals.
  • Assist with anesthesia support to include induction, maintenance, and recovery of animals for surgery, MRI scans, Pet scans.
  • Assist the Federal Task Leader and other staff with technical, clinical, and basic support of research experiments involving animals.
  • Performs routine animal health surveillance and assessment.
  • Assist with the routine care, treatments and support as prescribed by a veterinarian or the Federal Task Leader.
  • Record and collect diagnostic results and provide support to include sample collection, preparation, and analysis, (Dentistry, Hematology, Histology, Parasitological, Urology, Radiology and TB testing).
  • Assist with maintenance of the lab, such as maintains and update logbooks and inventory of drugs and supplies for the lab.
  • Provide routine preventive maintenance for all laboratory support equipment.
  • Assist the Federal Task Leader with animal and facility emergencies.
  • Assist in the Federal Task Leader with NIMH environmental enrichment program,
  • Adhere to all safety and animal protocols and regulations, such as but not limited to wearing proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and showering when necessary.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required; at least two years of college preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software is required, such as experience using Microsoft Office products including Outlook, MS Teams.
  • Must be certified as an AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) preferred. Other certifications or degrees may be considered.
    • Must have at least two years of rodent experience in laboratory animal facilities.
    • Must be able to work independently and communicate well.
