Primary Responsibilities:

The Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) at Sul Ross State University is hiring a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Community Ecology to begin in Fall 2025. We seek a scholar specializing in the interactions between habitat and wildlife community dynamics in arid ecosystems. The successful candidate will develop a robust research program focused on community ecology in arid ecosystems, exploring how ecological restoration influences species interactions, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions.
While the candidate may specialize in any taxonomic group (e.g., carnivores, birds, herpetofauna, plants, or other communities), they should demonstrate a strong interest in understanding how these communities respond to habitat restoration and management practices. Working closely with BRI partners-including private landowners, NGOs, and other academic institutions-the candidate will assess ecological outcomes relevant to wildlife conservation, ecosystem health, and species diversity in the context of arid landscapes.
Key Responsibilities: * Integrate within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with experts in various fields to advance BRl's mission.* Develop an independent research program focused on how wildlife communities, including key species such as pollinators, grassland birds, and mammals, respond to habitat restoration efforts, with a particular emphasis on the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem.* Mentor undergraduate/graduate students, guiding their research projects/academic development.
* Secure external funding through grant writing to support research initiatives. * Publish research findings in high-impact scientific journals, contributing significantly to community and restoration ecology.
The individual hired for this position will be responsible for teaching several key courses in the Natural Resource Management and Wildlife programs, including:
* Community Ecology* Range Ecology* Ecological Modeling
This position is security sensitive.
