Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services' (NDCS) Community Supervision Services is seeking an Assistant Parole Officer (APO) to provide technical support to the PREP House facility in Omaha. APO's will maintain the safety and security of the site while assisting resident clients with their programming needs. Students, this is a 24-hour facility with shifts that may be compatible with your class schedule. The position will involve minimal travel around the Omaha area in state vehicles.

DUTIES

Complete required training including but not limited to de-escalation, conflict resolution, ORAS, EPICS, electronic monitoring, Motivational Interviewing, webinars, breath testing, PPCT, Sex Offender Assessments (Static/Stable/Acute). Inspect and monitor DPS-operated office settings and PREP program to ensure required safety and sanitation standards are met. Train clients in specific task and job practices of sanitation to improve and maintain their performance levels in community residential living spaces. Inspect properties for safety and security issues. Operate alarm systems. Identify emergencies and respond appropriately. Conduct safety drills. Conducting phone contacts, face to face contacts, law enforcement contacts, ombudsman contacts, health and human services contacts. Assist with substance abuse programming, mental health programming, residence checks, employer checks, sponsor checks, employment checks. Participate in community based presentations. Conduct orientation.

Transport parolees locally and regionally to facilities, programming, human services, and other locations at the direction of supervision. Assist with client, vehicle, bags, and residence searches. Conduct drug and alcohol testing and record results. Computer usage including NCJIS, electronic monitoring, entering contact notes, respond to emails and phone calls. Answer incoming calls, triage issues, properly escalate if necessary. Carry and use restraints, body armor, chemical agents, and other safety equipment. Assist in arrests, detain clients if necessary or at the direction of supervision. Calibrate and maintain breath alcohol equipment. Basic maintenance and cleaning of state vehicles including transporting vehicles to maintenance and monitoring status of repairs. Upkeep, maintenance, and monitoring certification of equipment including but not limited to AED, electronic monitors, fire extinguishers, security systems, video surveillance systems.

Upkeep of office equipment such as computers, printers, and scanners. Office administration tasks including but not limited to checking mail, ordering and mailing equipment, processing deliveries, printing certificates, processing drug tests to mail out, processing and mailing money orders, and mailing DNA kits. Coordinating with vendors conducting maintenance, repair, delivery of equipment, retrieving and shredding material. Responsible for monitoring inventory and ordering drug testing kits, DNA kits, electronic monitoring equipment, PPE, office equipment, and other supplies. Monitor clients paroled to a detainer, on abscond status, and deported. Monitor caseloads of officers on leave. Conduct risk assessments, office and field visits, travel permit requests, and data entry in conjunction with supervising low risk clients at the direction of supervisors.

This position is in a 24-hour facility. The incumbent must be available to work varying shift schedules to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Differential pay is available for night-time shifts. Initial training will be normal business hours.

Training conducted at the Staff Training Academy, 2320 N 57th St, Lincoln, NE; Lincoln Regional Office, 421 South 9th Street, Suite 220, Lincoln, NE; or conducted remotely.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Coursework/training in administrative/office support functions, procedures, and methods including the operation of personal computers and office equipment; or areas related to the programs and functions of the employing agency OR experience in customer service or public contact; or applying criteria/regulations; and/or performing administrative/office/secretarial support work including use of personal computers and office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications: Associate degree or current courses in criminal justice, social sciences; demonstrated prior substance abuse or chemical testing training; previous experience working with the offender population.

Other: Must have a valid driver's license. Regular and reliable attendance is required. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients, orally and in writing. Capable of organizing and prioritizing daily work activities. Ability to follow directions. All Assistant Parole Officers undergo specific training that can be physical at times.
