We welcome candidates with research and teaching interests in any area of rhetoric and composition, with possible areas of interest including but not limited to the history of rhetoric, technical and professional writing, disability studies, digital rhetoric, or the study of language and literacy in relation to varied communities. The Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Rhetoric and Composition, beginning July 1, 2025. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Our department is home to a dynamic and close-knit rhetoric program, offering numerous opportunities for leadership and collaboration. We support an engaged cadre of graduate students and offer an undergraduate writing minor along with a well-enrolled writing concentration within the English major. Faculty in our program work closely with students and play a key role in shaping the future of our curriculum and research initiatives. Faculty have opportunities to affiliate with interdisciplinary programs, including Health Humanities, Game Studies, and Digital Humanities, allowing for broad cross-disciplinary engagement and research.

The successful candidate will teach a 2-2 load made up of graduate and undergraduate writing, rhetoric, and related courses; contribute to both undergraduate and graduate curricula; mentor students; participate in select writing program administrative activities; and engage in ongoing scholarly research.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated excellence in teaching, strong research portfolio, expertise in research methods, administrative and service experience.
