Work type: University Tenure Line
Location: Stanford University
Categories: School of Engineering

The Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University (https://bioengineering.stanford.edu) and the Arc Institute (https://arcinstitute.org) invite applications for a faculty position at the ranks of tenured Associate or Full Professor in the University Tenure Line.

This is a coordinated search between Stanford and the Arc Institute. The Arc Institute is a nonprofit research organization founded on the belief that many important scientific programs can be enabled by new organizational models. Arc operates in partnership with Stanford University, UCSF, and UC Berkeley, and fully funds its Core Investigators with renewable, eight-year appointments to provide complete freedom to pursue curiosity-driven research agendas at its new research facilities. Arc Institute Core Investigators have their lab space located at Arc Headquarters in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, California.

For this joint appointment, Bioengineering and Arc are conducting independent search processes and candidates will be evaluated and selected by both committees. Two separate applications are required (see below). The successful candidate will hold a Stanford Bioengineering appointment with all rights and privileges afforded Bioengineering faculty. In addition, the individual, as an Arc Core Investigator, will have office and research space with the Arc Institute, and receive all rights and privileges afforded by the Arc Institute, including annual funding. More information on the Core Investigator role can be found here: https://arcinstitute.org/programs/core-investigators.

Together, the Arc Institute and Stanford Bioengineering particularly encourage candidates with a strong track-record of exceptional contributions in the development, translation, and application of innovative concepts, tools, or methodologies in bioengineering. This search has a particular focus in immunology, neuroscience, and/or computational science/machine learning. That said, we give high priority to the overall originality and promise of the candidate's work, and encourage applications from individuals representing disciplines or opportunities that are not yet well-established within bioengineering, broadly defined. In addition to their scholarly research, the successful candidate will be expected to train the next generation of biomedical revolutionaries in their area.

Applicants should possess an earned Ph.D., D.Sc., and/or M.D. and have demonstrated the ability to pursue an independent research program. A strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching is required, as well as the ability to initiate and conduct research across disciplines. A successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and to build and lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research. Ideal candidates should also demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills, as well as an ability to contribute actively to a rapidly growing Stanford Department. Faculty rank at Stanford will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The Department of Bioengineering, the School of Engineering, Stanford University, and the Arc Institute all value faculty who will help foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these ideals. Additional information about Stanford's IDEAL initiative may be found here: https://ideal.stanford.edu/.

Applications should include the following materials:

  • Cover letter
  • Brief statements of research and teaching interests (3-5 pages total for both combined). Candidates are encouraged to describe specific planned research projects and courses that they might like to teach.
  • Detailed resume with a list of publications
  • The names and e-mail addresses of 3-5 references. We will request letters of recommendation after candidates are short-listed.

Applicants for this position must apply to both Stanford Bioengineering and the Arc Institute. Stanford will receive applications at https://facultypositions.stanford.edu/en-us/job/494802/associate-or-full-professor-stanford-university-department-of-bioengineering-and-arc-institute, and the Arc Institute will receive applications at http://arcinstitute.org/programs/coordinated-search-stanford-bioengineering. The review of applications will begin on January 15, 2025, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The expected base pay range for this position is:

Associate Professor (tenured): $162,325 - $194,845

Professor: $174,000 - $255,672

This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment and does not include summer salary. For more information about compensation and our wide range of benefits, including housing assistance, please contact the hiring department.

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
