Description of Work:

The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Crop Integrated Pest Management Specialist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This 12-month (calendar year), tenure-track appointment will specialize in integrated pest management of key pests in corn and soybean production systems in eastern Nebraska. The position is located in Lincoln, Nebraska with an apportionment of 55% extension and 45% research.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an integrated research and Extension program that leads to: (1) the development of complementary and integrated management tactics that mitigate new or persistent pests in corn and soybean, (2) the development and utilization of methods to monitor and mitigate resistance to management tactics, and (3) train students and postdocs.

Specific ResponsibilitiesExtension:The incumbent will have statewide responsibilities to develop proactive, innovative, and accessible educational programs of excellence in IPM of insect pests of corn and soybean with a focus in Eastern Nebraska. The Extension program will include needs assessment, planning, marketing, teaching/delivery, and evaluation of these educational programs and materials, and providing professional development in subject matter for Extension educators including on-farm research and demonstration. Critical needs will be identified and prioritized through discussions with stakeholders, program participants, cooperators, and Extension team members, and through program evaluation. Program emphasis will reflect the educational mission of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. All educational programs will be research-based, produce scholarly outcomes, and will meet affirmative action requirements, and embrace diversity and inclusion.

Research:The incumbent will develop an active, successful research program that addresses IPM and agroecology of arthropod pests in corn (corn rootworm, lepidopterans, etc.) and soybean grown in Eastern Nebraska, which supports their Extension programming. They will develop collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs with scientists at the Panhandle REEC, West Central REEC, Eastern REEC, Entomology and other departments within UNL, and other universities and agencies in the region to address current and emerging research needs. The incumbent will be expected to obtain external grants to support the research program, to publish research results in appropriate professional journals and other scholarly outlets, present research at professional meetings, to advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, supervise research support staff, and to participate in regional and multidisciplinary projects, as appropriate.
Service:Contribute to the academic community through departmental, university, and professional service activities. Serve on departmental and university committees, participate in outreach activities to promote entomology and science education, and collaborate with other faculty members to enhance interdisciplinary research efforts.
Collaboration:Foster collaborations with department colleagues, other departments, institutions, and external stakeholders to advance research and Extension. Seek opportunities to collaborate with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry partners to address real-world challenges related to insect management.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Entomology or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Training and experience in applied integrated pest management of arthropods.
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in working directly with farmers or extension educators to develop, access, and implement pest management tactics.
  • A strong record of original research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated competitiveness and a high level of success in obtaining external funding.
  • Evidence of effective or innovative dissemination strategies to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Three (3) or more years of postdoctoral experience in entomology or a related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of Extension experience showing collaborative work on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience and demonstrated commitment to excellence in mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
