Unit Mission Statement:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary is the oldest program in modern languages in the United States. The department traces its beginning to the establishment of a professorship in modern languages at William & Mary in a curriculum reform instituted by Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Today that single professorship has grown to nearly 50 faculty members offering courses in eight languages, literatures and cultures. Faculty members of every rank are engaged in teaching at all levels, in study abroad programs, in a variety of research activities, and in service to the College, the community, and the profession.

Position Summary:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a three year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor renewable instructional position that will begin August 10, 2025. This full-time teaching faculty appointment carries a service component commensurate with rank, and comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals and a framework for promotion.

We seek an individual with expertise in Russian language, literature, and culture. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a [3-3] teaching load.

Required Qualifications:

A Master's degree in Russian Studies/Slavic Studies is required. Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English. Previous teaching experience in teaching Russian language and culture at a US university.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or ABD is preferred at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2025). We seek qualified candidates with expertise in the region who will diversify our curricular offerings, including teaching courses in digital humanities.
