General Statement of Job:
The Carpenter performs general carpentry and assists with maintenance duties.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs all construction, carpentry and maintenance items and projects that fall under the maintenance department.
  2. Repairs and/or replaces defective equipment including door closets, seals, windows, door hardware and similar equipment.
  3. Reviews specifications and blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  4. Demolishes, removes and replaces damaged or worn-out parts of structures.
  5. Constructs walls using wood/metal studs and sheetrock/plywood.
  6. Installs suspended acoustic ceiling tiles with metal grid systems.
  7. Measures, cuts and shapes materials using measuring tapes and power tools.
  8. Repairs and replaces flooring materials.
  9. Constructs miscellaneous millwork.
  10. Utilizes the college’s work order system (CMMS) to note time spent and the work performed relative to specific work request.
  11. Prepares work order material by pulling from stock to meet technical and trade requirements.
  12. Communicates with contractors and vendors, as needed.
  13. Adheres to safety and health regulations.
  14. Operates and conducts routine preventive maintenance on College vehicles; notifies appropriate personnel of any vehicle maintenance required.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. High School Diploma or GED required.
  2. At least three (3) years of carpentry work experience required.


Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  1. Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. In addition, subject to federal background check.
  3. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license and be insurable under South Texas College’s insurance policy for driving.
  4. Must maintain authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.
