Cryo-Electron Microscopy Scientist🔍School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States📁Research📅Mar 29, 2021 Post Date📅88955 Requisition #Stanford School of Medicine is seeking a senior cryo-EM specialist to support the operation of our expanding, state-of-the-art electron microscopy facility. The facility includes 2 Titan Krios and a Glacios microscopes for single particle and tomography studies. This team member, along with others, will be responsible for oversight and maintenance of these microscopes as well as training and assisting users. The senior cryo-EM specialist will have ample opportunities to advance and grow professionally within our research environment, which includes the scientific communities at both Stanford and SLAC.We are looking for a colleague with previous cryoEM experience, who will be excited about interacting with researchers at all levels and will consistently strive to maintain a state-of-the-art facility. This EM scientist will join a team of two others to support Stanford's cryo-EM initiative. This job is an excellent opportunity for an electron microscopist interested in joining the Stanford/SLAC community. Duties include:

    Interface with users for training and data collection in both SPA and tomographyLoad samples and tune microscopes prior to data collection for novice users.Develop and implement Cryo-EM educational and training programs to improve use of facility by new users. Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.Participate in the maintenance of the TFS Glacios and Krios microscopes. This duty requires interfacing with TFS engineers to ensure optimal performance of the microscopes.Maintain ancillary, cryo-EM related equipment such as Vitrobot, glow discharger etc..Evaluate quality of data obtained by users and provide advice on strategies to improve data quality.Implement data collection strategies that will benefit our user community.Maintain accurate logs for microscope performance and usage.Interface and collaborate with High Performance Computing team, who will assist with computational needs for optimal data collection, storage and data processing.- Other duties may also be assigned

    The expected pay range for this position is $78,000 to $113,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:* Ph.D. in same field with 2 years of cryo-EM experience* BA or MA in structural biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related field plus 5 years of related experience; or At least 2-5 years of cryo-EM experience, with expertise in handling samples, using microscopes and evaluating data.* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.* Solid understanding of the principles of transmission electron microscopy.* Best practice knowledge of computational image processing and analysis of cryo-EM images. * General understanding of single particle cryo-EM workflow; experience in cryo electron tomography is a plus. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):Associate degree or certificate of completion in a related engineering or related scientific discipline, or three to four years of equivalent work experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
    Experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support. Experience with data analysis, experimental process, design, and development of prototypes, equipment, and/or systems related to area of specialization. Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific/engineering projects. Experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job. Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and check own work. Ability to communicate, liaise, and work with staff, students, faculty, and outside vendors.Ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
    Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

May require travel.
