Department Information
Housing Operations supports the on-campus housing and dining for over 12,000 students. We strive to create life-changing experiences by building relationships, developing others, and creating a sense of belonging for our students, their families, and the IU community.
Our Environmental Operations team provides quality service through custodial care in residential buildings on IUB campus. We contribute to the health and morale of students, staff, faculty, and visitors by maintaining building environments that are clean and in good repair.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Maintains facility and grounds through daily inspection.
- Promotes staff development and training.
- Ensures collaboration with campus partners inside and outside the department.
- Ensures accuracy of payroll/timekeeping reporting.
- Orders supplies and equipment for the daily operation of the facility.
General Responsibilities
- Schedules, assigns, and monitors work of custodial workers and/or moving and setup workers.
- Takes inventory of supplies and places orders as necessary to maintain stock levels.
- Serves as on-site trainer to explain work procedures and to demonstrate use and care of cleaning equipment.
- Acts as project leader for routine and non-routine work. Reviews and executes work orders. Guides the work of moving and setup workers in preparation for conferences, meetings, and events. Arranges tables, chairs, and furniture. Sets up public address systems and related equipment.
- Acts in relief of custodial workers, group leaders, and supervisors, performing custodial duties as needed.
- Operates van/passenger vehicle to transport mobile crews to various building sites.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 1 year of custodial/moving and set-ups experience and demonstrated leadership skills
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
- Maintain valid safety certifications (First Aid, CPR, BBP, AED, etc.) upon date of hire
SKILLS
Required
- Ability to effectively lead, direct, instruct, and interact with custodial personnel
- Ability to communicate orally and in written format with custodial personnel and other staff
- Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
- Knowledge of standard operating procedures for all equipment, materials, cleaning methods, and care and maintenance of such equipment
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the moving of very large and heavy items
- Ability to operate all manual and power cleaning equipment and snow removal equipment
- Ability to maintain safety certifications and pass required safety training
- Ability to use a computer
Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position oneself in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
