The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS) is a leader in the study of international affairs and the languages, cultures and perspectives shaping our world. HLS takes a multidisciplinary approach to global education, offering instruction in over 80 languages, the most in the country, and helping students develop cultural fluency and expertise in nearly every region, including Africa, Russia, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Establishes, builds, and maintains partnerships with external organizations, including businesses, government agencies, NGO's, and other educational institutions.
  • Collaborates with HLS senior leadership to align partnership initiatives with the institution's strategic goals and enhance the practical and professional offerings of the school.
  • Serves as a liaison between the institution and external partners to facilitate communication, project development, and resource sharing including programs like the D.C. Global Leadership Forum.
  • Engages in grant writing and fundraising to support policy engagement and experimental learning programs.
  • Facilitates HLS connections to current policy topics and discussions with government agencies, legislators, and other stakeholders.
  • Serves as the HLS staff lead for the Master of International affairs program with the O'Neill School of public and Environmental Affairs and help develops other policy relevant academic programs.
  • Manages and grows the HLS global Leaders Forum in Washington, D.C. ensuring its continued success and expansion.
  • Develops additional programs in key regions or areas of strategic importance that provide immersive, experiential learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Designs, implements, and as appropriate, leads other policy-related programs and initiatives, such as policy labs, workshops, short-courses, and seminars, that engage students and faculty in developing practical and professional skills relevant to international affairs.
  • Creates and manages opportunities for students to participate in field specific internships, fellowships, and projects with external partners, integrating these experiences into their academic and professional development.
  • Oversees the planning and execution of events and initiatives related to policy engagement, including conferences, workshops, and speaker series.
  • Works with faculty to develop and expand co-curricular professional opportunities, ensuring alignment with curricular goals and enhancing student learning experiences.
  • Collaborates with IU's Walter Center for Career Achievement and other relevant campus units to promote professional development and career readiness among students.
  • Provides structured guidance and mentorship to students pursuing policy-related careers, helping them leverage HLS institutional partnerships and navigate academic and professional pathways, including through a limited number of regular office hours.
  • Develops metrics and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of policy engagement initiatives on student learning and career outcomes.
  • Prepares regular reports and presentations for senior leadership, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Uses data and feedback to continuously improve policy engagement programs and partnerships, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of students and external partners.
  • Responsible for establishing, building, and maintaining partnerships with external entities to enhance student opportunities in employment, research, project-based learning, and career development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Working closely with HLS senior leadership.
  • Aims to integrate practical and professional experiences into the school's offerings.
  • Leads the development and implementation of policy-related programs and initiatives, engaging students and faculty through policy labs, workshops, table-top exercises and seminars.
  • Focuses on creating pathways and opportunities for students to successfully achieve post-graduate goals. The Director's goal is to cultivate a comprehensive and dynamic environment that fosters student success and expands institutional opportunities in international affairs.
General Responsibilities
  • Implements the organization's strategic vision and direction by developing, initiating, and/or supporting new programs and services, creating annual work plans, and operating within a board-approved balanced budget.
  • Ensures the maintenance of effective office management, financial management, record-keeping, and equipment and software.
  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including developing branding strategy and targeting audiences for these events.
  • Oversees or represents the program in communications to program participants, supporting institutions, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues and programs.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds.
  • Oversees research and academic activities budgets for programs. Identifies funding requirements and funding sources to ensure adequate resources to sustain program goals. Leads grant writing.
  • Evaluates the performance of lower-level staff, recommends development and performance plans, promotions and disciplinary action and is accountable for consistent administration of university policies.
  • Keeps abreast of best practices to create and implement policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana with up to 30% travel (domestic and international)
