About the Department

The Masters Program in Computer Science (MPCS) is a professionally-oriented MS in Computer Science degree program in the Department of Computer Science. Our mission is to provide students a deep foundation in computer science and the essential skills required for a successful career in technology. Our rigorous curriculum covers theory, programming, and applications. Graduates of the MPCS are in demand by top companies for their ability to contribute immediately in technically challenging roles as well as to adapt quickly to rapidly evolving technologies.

The MPCS program has several programs of study, including a 9-Course and MS in CS program, a 12-course specialization MS in CS program, a Pre-Doctoral MS in CS and a joint MBA/MPCS program with the Booth School of Business. Students can complete the MPCS full time or part time. Areas of focus for students include Application Development, Data Analytics, High Performance Computing and Software Engineering.

Job Summary

The Director of Student Affairs will lead and manage the MPCS student services team in support of the program and divisional-level priorities and objectives. The Director will work in collaboration with MPCS leadership to drive continuous improvement in academic and administrative policy that will support the growth of the program and enhance the student experience.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the MPCS student affairs team and overall operations ensuring efficient and effective outcomes for all MPCS students.
  • Manages the student affairs employees including selection, training, annual performance goals, allocating resources, and assessing team performance.
  • Leads and recommends process improvements in student affairs operations, including, but not limited to, onboarding, registration, and student advising.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures related to registration, academic performance, accommodations, course staffing, financial aid, visa processing and work authorizations.
  • Manages reporting and metrics and provides critical insights to support MPCS budgeting and strategic planning efforts.
  • Oversees registration systems and related processes to ensure efficient and accurate enrollment management; oversees process for external course requests and any billing associated with outside registrations.
  • Manages support for student advising on administrative and academic issues, as appropriate; assists in resolving student issues, provides guidance and meets with students as needed.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key student and academic stakeholders across the university such as PSD, Student Wellness, Student Disability Services, UChicago Grad, Bursar's office, Registrar's office and more.
  • Facilitates professional development opportunities for the student affairs team in order to advance their knowledge and creativity in the work that they do.
  • Manages the development, scheduling, and implementation of programs and marketing communications. Will also evaluate the effectiveness of programs and revise the curriculum as needed.
  • Initiates and maintains contact with client organizations. Also engages in activities that promote programs, including speaking at professional and alumni gatherings, writing articles, and presenting papers.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Experience:
  • Experience in academic affairs, including direct student-facing responsibilities.
  • Experience with international students.
  • Experience managing human resources processes.
  • Experience working with faculty and instructors.
  • Experience with professionally oriented graduate programs.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in office software such as Microsoft Office, Google Docs, etc.
  • Experience using Canvas, Zoom, Panopto.
  • Experience using U of C systems, including Stellic, my.uchicago.edu, GEMS, AIS, and Technolutions Slate.
