Position Purpose:

The Electrical Shop is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all the College's electrical power distribution systems. The Electrician III installs, repairs, and maintains electrical distribution systems, circuits, equipment, and controls, mentors junior electricians, and assists the Electrician IV in work involving high voltage systems.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Valid NH Electrician license plus 4 years apprenticeship & 8 years relevant experience
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Must be able to independently perform responsibilities of an Electrician I and II.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical systems including conduit systems, wire tray systems, lighting control systems, variable frequency drives, low voltage/data wiring systems.
  • Thorough understanding of trade products including conduit types and wire joining methods.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints; working knowledge of building codes, especially the National Electric Code.
  • Working knowledge of College Construction guidelines. Ability to use College data sources for access to building plans and O&M manuals.
  • Well versed in using common hand and power tools, and test equipment, such as multimeter temperature guns and probes, and similar electronic testing equipment to diagnose problems.
  • Working knowledge and skill in all aspects of the electrical trade, including some experience in and knowledge of the College's high voltage electrical distribution systems and related methods of splicing, testing, and terminating.
  • Must be knowledgeable in and able to apply all relevant national and local electrical codes, safety regulations, and Dartmouth College Construction Standards.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to share work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Computer skills including basic word processing, spreadsheet, and building system programs. Smartphone skills to use vendor software for programming various basic electric components. Ability to work at heights and to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Willingness to obtain further (vendor) training which may be online, local in-person, or at a remote location.

Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fit and Physical Examination
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training

Primary responsibilities

  • Under general supervision and/or following plans, blueprints, or sketches, determines work methods to accomplish assignments. Plans and lays out the needed routing, placement and arrangements of a system's circuits, controls and equipment. Assists with minor renovations.
  • Uses college data sources for access to building plans and O&M manuals.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components of machines such as relays, switches and motors, position sensing devices and re-lamps indoor and outdoor fixtures.
  • Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests, and adjusts a variety of equipment, circuitry, and fixtures, relays and switchgear, fans, and switches.
  • Tests circuits and equipment by use of multimeter or ammeter.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs conduit. Inserts, splices, and connects wires to fixtures, outlets, switches, receptacles, and power source.
  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Learns from senior Electrician technicians via working with and understanding procedures. For example, receives clear and concise instructions from coworkers; is educated while accepting constructive input from coworkers performing work; while performing maintenance work, learn the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.

  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment; connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Investigates and troubleshoots lighting control systems using vendor software to perform physical repairs.
  • Installs, programs, and troubleshoots VFD (variable frequency drive).
  • Investigates, troubleshoots, and programs various electric components such as variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus, using test equipment, and replaces damaged or broken wires and cables.
  • Investigates and troubleshoots lighting control systems using vendor software to perform physical repairs.
  • Performs campus Dig Safe responsibilities.
  • Assists the Electrician IV with the installation, maintenance, and repair of high voltage cable systems.
