The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering. The department has opportunities in the Virginia Class Submarines, Columbia Class Submarines, Model Based Aircraft Carriers and process engineering. This position is for a Mechanical Engineer 2 who provides hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction and final assembly of the Reactor Plant and Propulsion Plant supporting systems.
Evaluates and resolves engineering related production problems related to manufacturing, design, quality and material engineering. Analyzes engineering specifications and drawings; confers with quality, material, manufacturing and subcontractors to provide and obtain technical information; investigates reports of defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment or systems; and reviews production schedules and orders. You will play a crucial role in the development and implementation of innovative solutions for designing, building and sustaining the most advanced aircraft carriers and/or submarines in the world.
A successful candidate will possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during construction. The individual shall have the communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel. In addition, the individual will be willing to provide hands-on support on the deck plate.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
