Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services department provides support and advocacy services to individuals affected by gender-based violence and strives to prevent all forms of gender-based violence on campus. This department works collaboratively with partners on campus to address the comprehensive needs of survivors of violence and address its root causes.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC-Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

UNC-Chapel Hill's Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) seeks a dynamic, compassionate, self-driven professional to serve as a Gender Violence Services Coordinator (GVSC). This position provides confidential support and services for campus community members directly and indirectly impacted by gender-based violence and harassment, including sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual violence, sexual exploitation, interpersonal violence, and stalking. This individual should have a thorough understanding of trauma-informed practices, be a creative problem-solver, exhibit excellent judgment in difficult situations, and be capable of effectively communicating complex and sensitive information with nuance and compassion.

Gender Violence Services Coordinators support UNC-Chapel Hill students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional), employees, post-doctoral scholars, community members, and alumni. GVSCs also assist with facilitation of Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services outreach, training, and programming.

The Gender Violence Services Coordinator (GVSC) reports to the Director of Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services.
This position requires a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary-focused professional willing to develop and foster relationships, engage, and work closely with campus and community partners (e.g., Equal Opportunity and Compliance, law enforcement and campus safety, Student Affairs, medical providers, and faculty).

Primary duties include providing direct service support and case management services including emotional support, coordinating support for academics, on campus housing, and workplaces, navigating reporting processes and providing accompaniment during university, law enforcement, and court proceedings, coordinating campus and community referrals, assisting with safety planning, and consultation for campus members seeking to effectively support others. GVSCs help in identifying and understanding reporting options including law enforcement and court processes, UNC-Chapel Hill's Policy on Prohibited Sexual Harassment under Title IX, Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct, and Workplace Violence Policy, as well as non-UNC campus reporting options.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful candidate will have experience providing trauma-informed care and services. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in case management, including data and records management skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with diplomacy, excellent judgment, and discretion in accordance with University, state, and federal requirements.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with a diverse, college-age community and providing services from a non-judgmental perspective.
  • Ability to understand the needs of the university and work collaboratively in a wide array of situations with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Superior interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate succinctly and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in multi-tasking and efficacy in a fast-pasted environment.
  • Robust strategies for keeping organized and serving as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Master's degree in higher education, social work or other relevant discipline.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience in direct service advocacy or a related field.
  • Experience presenting and facilitating educational programming.
  • Previous experience working on a college campus.
  • Knowledge of student development best practices and a strong desire to provide a supportive environment for students.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Campus SaVE, and the Jeanne Clery Act.
    *Familiarity with legislation and regulations related to violence prevention and response including ADA (the Americans with Disabilities Act), FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability), and other applicable state, federal, and university guidelines.
