Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Materials & Research Division has an exciting opportunity for an Engineer to build a career in geotechnical engineering by joining a hardworking and supportive team. If hired, you'll gain experience with earthwork construction, bridge foundations, and retaining structure projects with a unique blend of analysis and design time spent in the office as well as field work utilizing a wide array of equipment and instrumentation. This is an opportunity to be directly engaged in all phases of NDOT projects from investigation to construction while working with multiple transportation disciplines to solve different challenges every day.
If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. Pay rate for this classification is $30.577 per hour.
Job Duties:
- Create geologic profiles of projects for foundation design using fieldwork and laboratory tests.
- Review geologic profiles, test data, structure types, etc. Recommend foundation type.
- Under supervision, perform engineering analysis of project subsurface conditions.
- Design bridge foundations (piling, drilled shafts, spread footings).
- Review and maintain pile-driving records. Maintain data in pile record and boring log databases.
- Assist with settlement and slope stability calculations.
- Utilize computer-generated models such as Wave Equation analysis, CAPWAP, and APILE.
- Perform field testing of bridge foundations and soil mechanics projects.
- Operate pile-driving analyzer and cross hole sonic logger and communicate results to project managers and contractors.
- Assist in performing subsurface exploration, testing, and instrumentation. • Support field staff, provide guidance and recommendations for NDOT projects. Identify and help resolve special problems on site.
- Participate and review both in-house and academic research related to the geotechnical and materials field.
- Assist the Bridge Foundation and Geotechnical Engineers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications:Professional Engineer I: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
Engineer: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Civil Engineering degree with geotechnical and materials related focus.
- Experience or education in foundation design and soil mechanics.
- Bridge design and earthwork construction experience and knowledge.
- Experience or knowledge in geotechnical and foundation modeling / computational programs.
- Experience interpreting highway construction plans and field construction.
- Experience with soils sampling, logging, and testing.
Other:
- Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program or evaluated as equivalent by NCEES.
- Must be available for out of town and overnight travel.
- Approximately 25% of the time will be spent at bridge sites.
- A valid driver's license or ability to provide authorized independent transportation is required.
- Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Nebraska geology and soil and rock types.
- Knowledge or education in basic survey techniques
