About the Opportunity
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Specialist works under the direction of the Associate Director of the Animal Research Compliance Program and in close collaboration with IACUC Manager to support the day-to-day management of Brown's animal care and use program. This position serves as the primary point of contact for the Animal Research Compliance program, and works collaboratively and independently with faculty, staff, and students/trainees. This role actively participates in the development and revision of ARC/IACUC education materials for Principal Investigators (PIs), laboratory managers, and other research team members to improve protocol submission quality and facilitate expeditious reviews and approvals. The IACUC Specialist independently reviews animal care and use protocols, interacts closely with Principal Investigator (PIs), IACUC members and veterinarians to ensure regulatory and policy requirements are followed. The IACUC Specialist will take the lead in organizing and implementing the semiannual program review and facility inspection process. This position will support the IACUC Manager in maintaining and expanding the content and resources available on the IACUC website and will contribute to writing required regulatory reports to outside bodies (OLAW, AAALAC, USDA). The IACUC Specialist will keep apprised of regulatory changes and recommend ways to reduce administrative burden and increase efficiency, and assist the IACUC Manager with writing policies, directives, and SOPs for review and approval by the IACUC and University leadership. The IACUC Specialist will be the resident systems expert for the electronic protocol submission and review system used by PIs/researcher staff, the IACUC, Office for Research Integrity (ORI) and Animal Care and will conduct training related to use of the system.
Qualifications
Education
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree; and 2-4 years of related administrative experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred:
- CPIA certification desirable.
Experience
- Prior relevant experience (in animal research, animal technician, sponsored projects administration) preferred.
- Scientific experience or research experience preferred.
Job Competencies
- Proficiency in working with electronic databases and tracking systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, PHS Policy on Humane care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA AWA and Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
- Demonstrated facility with interpreting regulations.
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills. Must be detail oriented. Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve and prioritize.
- Ability to independently develop and implement short and long-term goals and also work as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to research, analyze and summarize complex information.
- Customer-service focused approach with strong interpersonal skills. Confident public speaker. Highly effective oral and written communication skills necessary.
- Frequently operates a computer and other office equipment such as a printer/copy machine.
- Frequently moves about inside the office to access printer, files, and other materials/equipment.
- Frequently moves about campus to various locations for meetings.
- Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
