As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work. You won't just be sitting in meetings and shadowing all summer; you'll be actively contributing and doing the same work as other FirstEnergy employees on your team. You'll receive on-the-job training and challenging assignments. You will also be assigned a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator to help you maximize your learning and growth throughout your summer... and beyond. Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time, paid opportunities spanning 14 weeks. You must be actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.

About the EMS Transmission TX SCADA Design Engineering Team

This is a technical team with a focus on the installation, maintenance, repair, testing and configuration of Information Technology equipment that supports the operation of the transmission and distribution systems. Equipment types include network devices, Remote Terminal Units, power line carrier, remote controlled switches, telecommunication circuits, two-way radios, mobile computing, and other devices.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) integrates software and hardware components to enable organizations to manage and oversee industrial operations by directly connecting with plant-floor equipment and accessing real-time data. The FirstEnergy EMS Transmission SCADA Design Engineering team is responsible to develop and apply standards, manage firmware, perform version management, and advise on the use and engineering principles to support FirstEnergy's Transmission SCADA environment. The team focuses on ensuring a world class SCADA system for use by Transmission Operations. This position is focused on the field device SCADA configurations, SCADA point-to-point verification, and interface maintenance to the EMS system.

Note: While this opportunity is primarily a remote position, you can expect to be onsite at least once a week. As such, you must be local to the Cleveland/Akron/Canton (Ohio) or Fairmont/Morgantown (West Virginia) area
Responsibilities of a SCADA Electrical Engineer

  • Supports FirstEnergy's Transmission & Distribution Energy Management Systems (EMS). Core responsibilities include Designing, developing, and supporting Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field equipment that communicates with FirstEnergy's Transmission & Distribution Energy Management System (EMS).
Additional job duties and responsibilities of a SCADA Electrical Engineer
  • Designing for the installation and modification of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field equipment, with an emphasis on configuration of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to communicate to real-time systems that monitor and control field assets. Ex: RTU's, Data Concentrators, and HMI's.
  • Complete and issue SCADA Design Work Package
  • Perform data analysis and create reports, scorecards, and historical trends
  • Assist with administration, maintenance, and upgrades of software
  • Managing schedules and coordinate changes following established department procedures
Applicant Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Electrical Engineering
  • Class Standing - Rising Junior
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Must be local to the Cleveland/Akron/Canton (Ohio) or Fairmont/Morgantown (West Virginia) area
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Strong knowledge of the following:
    • Basic Network Concepts
    • PC Usage, Windows 10 operating system preferred
    • MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), MS Outlook
  • Provide network circuit design, platform administration, and support.
  • Environmental support systems for the technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.)
  • Core competencies to include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), presentation, and drafting/drawing (Visio/CAD/GIS) skills.
  • Circuit design and drawing management tools.
  • Tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these circuits and manage the work.
  • Project management concepts and tools.
  • Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA); Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).

  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong technical writing skills
