The Lead Surveyor, Passenger Vessels, provides guidance and oversight of classification, certification, and statutory survey work within Regional Offices regarding Passenger Vessels. The Lead Surveyor is responsible for maintaining the quality and consistency of the survey work within the Regional Offices and verifying compliance with the applicable ABS and statutory requirements as appropriate.

What You Will Do:

  • Act as a professional specialist for the organization in the application of related rules, regulations, requirements, concepts, principles, and processes for Passenger Vessels.
  • Stay current with ABS Rules, Guides, Guidance Notes, and Statutory requirements, as well as with forthcoming changes to respective requirements; assist in the dissemination of requirements to the respective Regional Offices.
  • Assist in developing guidance and training for survey staff on implementing and applying ABS Rules, Guides, Guidance Notes, and Statutory requirements as required by Assistant Chief Surveyors(s).
  • Makes survey-related presentations to the Surveyors within Regional Offices on passenger vessel surveys, compliance, etc.
  • Present Surveyor training courses at the ABS Academy or other locations.
  • Support regional Operations and perform surveys when required on classed passenger and other vessels, platforms, or other marine structures and at manufacturers for classification and compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Provide input for survey-related Rule and/or PI changes.
  • Assists the Regional Director and Area Managers of Operations with the Surveyor Monitoring Program and Secondary Report Review of passenger vessels to ensure the achievement of Corporate and local goals.
  • Provides Corporate and local goal oversight through Surveyor activity monitoring on passenger or other vessels.
  • Attends Technical Committees, Industry meetings, and training as necessary and assists in presenting survey-related matters related to Passenger Vessels.
  • May assist Hemisphere and Regional marketing efforts at trade shows and other occasions, as requested by the Hemisphere Vice President for Operations or Business Development.
  • Provide guidance to ABS Passenger Vessel clients through meetings and/or seminars on changes to ABS Rules and Regulatory requirements.
  • Keep the responsible Assistant Chief Surveyor(s) advised of major survey-related problems in the Hemisphere and Regional offices.
  • Liaise with the PSC MOU Regimes, as necessary, regarding ABS classed vessels that have been detained by the Port State Authorities. Attends complex Passenger Vessel PSC interventions or detentions.
  • Appraise direct subordinates' performance and development potential and recommend appropriate compensation adjustments.
What You Will Need:

Education and Experience
  • Qualifications from a tertiary institution within a relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum two (2) years program); and or
  • Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer, and
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services and, before assignment, with their future work.
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in an operational aspect of passenger vessel industry or as Senior or Principal Surveyor with past passenger vessel survey and operational experience.
  • A comprehensive understanding of ABS strategic technical positioning in their respective sector of the marine industry.
  • International assignment or significant exposure to international processes, requirements, business issues and problem resolution.
  • Possesses and demonstrates a mastery of the comprehensive body of knowledge in Survey operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related instructions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and have a basic understanding of shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
  • Ability to perform passenger vessel surveys in the prescribed format.
  • Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
  • Detailed knowledge of passenger ships' engineering systems, statutory elements, and machinery.
  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise.
  • The management skills to organize, plan, and direct the work activities of other professional employees.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.

  • Appropriate certification and/or licenses in the area of specialization may be required.
Reporting Relationships:

The Lead Surveyor will report to a senior-level manager and may have direct reports.

Working Conditions:

Travel to and from survey sites and manufacturing plants going aboard various vessels, offshore platforms, or structures. Some work may be performed in an office environment. Some work may be performed in confined spaces, and it may be necessary to climb vertical ladders of various heights, and construction staging of various heights. The use of small tools and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with ABS safety procedures, may be required.
