Job Description Summary

The Institute for Law & Economics is a leading center for corporate law, governance, business, and finance. A University Institute housed in the Law School, it reflects collaboration between Penn Carey Law, the Wharton School, and the Department of Economics. The Managing Director of ILE reports to the faculty co-Directors and assumes primary responsibility for implementing a rich agenda of programming and communicating ILE's initiatives and faculty research to a host of audiences. The Managing Director's responsibilities include:

Job Description

Programming

  • Organize, participate in, and contribute to strategic sessions to setting ILE's ambitious schedule and projects.
  • Develop agenda and build resources around conference and symposium topics, student opportunities, and ILE research efforts.
  • Manage all event details in collaboration with the Law School's Conferences and Events team. For each event:
  • Develop a high-level invitation list coordinated with conference topics; ensure excellent attendance at all events.
  • Oversee and approve calendaring, invitation and promotional materials design and delivery.
  • Oversee vendor selection and negotiation of contracts.
  • Work with Conferences & Events to ensure expert on-site oversight on the day of events; personally manage high-level visitors.
  • Support the faculty co-Directors in developing and implementing Executive Education, on-line education, and other educational activities; coordinate with Penn Carey Law Legal Education Programs staff on ILE programming.
  • Ensure completion of all financial requirements for events. Oversee the Program Manager's collaboration vendors, participants, Conferences & Events, and Business Affairs colleagues to ensure timely and complete payment of all expenses.


Data Management and Analysis
  • Ensure creation and management of a historically accurate set of data about ILE activities, events, and participants.
  • Oversee the development and management of ILE data bases, maintaining excellent and reportable data about all ILE events.
  • Provide support to faculty co-Directors on any ILE research projects.
  • Generate analysis and reports for faculty Co-Directors.
  • Build data throughout the year to feed into annual program and other reports.


Communications and External Relations
  • Participate in an on-going and ambitious reputational campaign for ILE.
    • Engage in relationship building with ILE Board members; represent ILE to donors, faculty, students, visitors, and speakers.
    • Represent ILE and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School to recruit the participation in ILE activities of high-level academics (including from Penn's schools and centers), representatives from advocacy and business groups, judges, regulators, and lawyers from around the country and the globe.
  • Collaborate with the Law School's Communications team to design and implement strategies for the publication of ILE research and communication about its multi-faceted programming.
    • Manage the ILE and auxiliary websites.
    • Compose and publish original content to further ILE's visibility and reputation, including developing and implementing substantive content (articles, blogs on programs, etc.).
    • Oversee all ILE social media outreach to publicize ILE research and programming.
  • Oversee the drafting, design, production, and distribution of ILE's Annual Report.


Development and Stewardship
  • Work with the faculty co-Directors and collaborate with the Law Development & Alumni Relations Office (DAR) to continue and grow ILE's ongoing membership drives and outreach.
  • Collaborate with DAR on an annual membership appeal and to ensure accurate reporting of ILE Board membership dues and other funding efforts on an an-going basis.
  • Collaborate with DAR and others to ensure excellent Board stewardship efforts.


Management
  • Hire, inspire, and ensure professional development of a part-time (20 hours/week) Program Manager.
  • Oversee daily operations of ILE.
  • Work collaboratively with the Program Manager, the Faculty Support team, Conferences and Events staff, and other Penn Carey Law and University resources to ensure maximum support for the work of the Institute.
  • Create a draft budget for faculty co-Directors' approval; monitor budget revenues and expenditures.
  • Hire and manage work-study students and other part-time assistants.


Qualifications: J.D. required and 5 - 7 years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Practice experience in corporate, M&A or securities law valued. Strong track record of event management and/or support of major administrative projects. Excellent administrative acumen with experience managing data projects and communications efforts, including website management. Content development a plus. Applicant should have an established track record as collaborator in the workplace, within the immediate department and within a larger institution, including excellent ability to delegate to and supervise administrative support staff.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
