Job Summary
- Tunes, voices, inspects, repairs, and rebuilds pianos to achieve the highest possible level of musical performance using specialized tools and instruments and in accordance with professional standards and procedures.
- Adjusts piano strings to the proper tension, tunes pitch, makes repairs, and regulates pianos; monitors assigned classrooms on a regular basis to check for damage to pianos.
- Responds to special requests from faculty and students regarding concert pianos.
- Locates and repairs problems in wooden, steel, iron, ivory, and felt parts; realigns action parts; replaces old or worn parts; reconditions assigned pianos.
- Maintains inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies needed for repairs.
- Maintains schedules and records of work completed.
- May assist as a technician for related instruments, such as harpsichords and/or forte pianos.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Preferred- Bachelor's degree in piano performance, music education, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 4 years training and/or experience as a piano technician
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required- RPT registered piano technician certification upon date of hire

Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Work LocationIU Bloomington campus
This is an in-person position.
