The Stanford Cyber Policy Center at the Freeman Spogli Institute is Stanford's premier hub for the interdisciplinary study of issues at the nexus of technology, governance, and public policy. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Stanford Cyber Policy Center (CPC) is seeking a Policy Analyst to join our team exploring internet abuse, information manipulation, and emerging technology. This role will be an integral part of a dynamic and collaborative team carrying out cutting edge research. You will provide consultative guidance to our director and researchers on sensitive issues related to trust and safety, platform policy, information interference, and emerging technology. By working closely with researchers and staff you will develop coherent outreach strategies that translate our research for communication and presentations to policy makers, practitioners, community leaders and peers. You will have Internet policy expertise and contacts to brief the team and engage on current debate, policy and regulatory developments, and relevant events related to CPC's research areas.

In this role you will:

  • Be intimately familiar with the research of the Cyber Policy Center - both ongoing and published - to identify important policy implications and findings relevant to ongoing public debate.

  • Develop original content for a lay but sophisticated national and global target audience.

  • Submit weekly briefings to the CPC team summarizing important ongoing public debates.

  • Organize events and briefings with CPC experts and relevant interested stakeholders.

  • Revise, edit and provide feedback on publications; draft executive summaries of ongoing research for a policy audience.

  • This is a 100% FTE fixed-term position.The term concludes two years from the start date and may be extended based on need and funding availability. This position may be based in either Washington, D.C. or the San Francisco Bay Area. Please apply only if you are currently located in one of these areas or are willing to relocate.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Research, plan, write, and edit original/complex publications for style and substance.

  • Develop and publish sensitive policy statements and publications for internal and/or external audiences.

  • Ensure adherence of editorial content to guidelines and oversee the work of other editorial staff or free-lancers.

  • Recommend changes and amendments to communications or publications.

  • Work within deadlines and cost constraints of clients.

  • Advise and collaborate with clients on editorial and publication methods.

  • Communicate with writers, editors, photographers, vendors, and contractors, and review publication process.

  • Serve as a resource in developing strategies that promote effective delivery of publications/editorials to target audiences.

  • May assist with performance evaluation, hiring, and staff management.

  • May supervise professional or support personnel.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong writing, analysis and critical reading skills.

  • Knowledge of ongoing debates around technology and social media regulation.

  • Highly professional and rapid communication abilities and the discretion to communicate appropriately to different audiences.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Frequently sitting.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

Remote/Hybrid:

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $86,097 to $114,124 per annum for remote positions.

The expected pay range for this position is $111,329 to $132,242 per annum for hybrid positions.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships.
