Job Summary

Vertiv is seeking an innovative and experienced Principal Electrical Research Engineer to join our cutting-edge research and development team in Delaware, Ohio. This role will focus on blue-sky projects in the field of 1-Phase (1P) and low-end 3-Phase (3P) UPS systems (ranging from 10kVA to 120kVA), with the goal of advancing technology and developing transformative solutions that will shape the future of power engineering for the next 5+ years.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of power engineering, combined with knowledge of physical infrastructure systems such as cooling, racks, and monitoring. This role is crucial in exploring next-generation technologies and trends, anticipating industry challenges, and delivering groundbreaking solutions to meet future market needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and drive advanced research initiatives for 1P and low-end 3P UPS systems, focusing on disruptive technologies and innovative solutions aimed at addressing future industry challenges.
  • Conduct in-depth research on emerging trends in power electronics, energy storage, grid connectivity, and power conversion systems, with a specific focus on UPS applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, firmware, and systems engineering, to evaluate new technologies and explore their integration into future products.
  • Design and conduct experiments, simulations, and prototypes to evaluate the feasibility of new concepts.
  • Explore energy efficiency innovations, sustainability initiatives, and next-generation battery technologies for UPS systems.
  • Lead the identification of technical trends and market demands that will influence the development of future UPS products and solutions.
  • Participate in strategic decision-making processes by providing technical insights into future product roadmaps.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and researchers, fostering a collaborative environment for technical growth and innovation.
  • Work closely with product management, marketing, and other business units to ensure alignment between research initiatives and business goals.
Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in electrical engineering or a related field. PhD preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in power engineering, with extensive knowledge of UPS systems, particularly in 1P and low-end 3P (10kVA to 120kVA) configurations.
  • Proven expertise in power conversion technologies, inverter and rectifier systems, energy storage systems, and grid interaction for UPS applications.
  • Experience with advanced research methodologies and a passion for exploring new, disruptive technologies.
  • Some familiarity with physical infrastructure systems (such as cooling, racks, power distribution, and monitoring systems) is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of global power standards, compliance, and regulatory requirements for UPS systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and think critically about long-term challenges and opportunities in the power electronics field.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Office and electrical lab environment.
  • Must be comfortable working in an electronics lab performing or guiding experiments.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience working on blue-sky projects and next-generation technology development in the power electronics space.
    • Familiarity with energy storage systems, including lithium-ion batteries, flywheels, and supercapacitors, is a strong plus.
    • Knowledge of software-defined power systems and smart grid technologies.
