The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts is a world-class, multi-venue performing arts center on the campus of the University of Denver. Home to the Lamont School of Music, The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events annually. In addition to performances by Lamont students and faculty, the Newman Center is an in-demand performance venue for numerous rental clients including the Denver Post Pen and Podium Series, Friends of Chamber Music, Denver Brass, The CELL and many others. The Newman Center also presents nationally touring performing arts groups through its acclaimed series, Newman Center Presents. In addition, the Newman Center engages students, teachers and the community through its learning and community engagement programming.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Production Services, the Production Coordinator (Audio) runs audio production for events and activities, including concerts, rehearsals, lectures, etc. The Production Coordinator (Audio) advises the Assistant Director of Production Services on the audio equipment needs of each NCPA venue. This position serves as a production lead on assigned events days and must have excellent audio engineering skills for music as well as a working knowledge of all aspects of production, including lighting, video, and other production elements. Coordinator manages and maintains audio system in Gates Concert Hall and works in cooperation with the Lamont School of Music and the DU Theatre Department on advisement and management of audio in Hamilton Recital Hall, Williams Salon, and Byron Theater.
Essential Functions
- Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, Production, manage all aspects of an event's audio needs, including set-up, audio mixing for musical as well as non-musical events, technical needs, and overseeing outside contracted audio labor.
- Maintain the University's reputation for service and quality.
- Conduct training and onboarding for part-time staff.
- Serve as Production Team Lead on performance days, as assigned by Assistant Director of Production
- Track maintenance needs and file appropriate reports with the Assistant Director of Production Services.
- Exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior as a representative of the University.
- Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all members of the University community, including the Theatre Department, the Lamont School of Music, external rental clients, and vendors.
- Request bids and assist with procurement of equipment.
- Serve as point of contact for NCPA production for assigned events
- Assume pre-production duties for events assigned by Assistant Director of Production Services
- Acquire technical information and scheduling from clients/production staff
- Communicate pricing and availability of labor/equipment
- Determine labor needs to assist with scheduling
- Serve as production lead on the day(s) of event, supervise all aspects of event production
- AUDIO: Serve as technical audio lead on staff
- Front of house and/or monitor mixing for musical as well as non-musical events.
- Management of audio equipment inventory and maintenance
- Procurement of audio equipment
- Determine and conduct necessary training for part-time staff and contractors
- Independently pursue professional development opportunities to bolster knowledge base and keep up with trends in respective field.
- Assume other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Production Services and Director of Business and Operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Excellent written, verbal, and reasoning skills.
- Mathematical skills as needed for safe installation of equipment
- Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following systems including their installation, abilities, and skills
- Audio:
- Front of House and/or monitor mixing for musical as well as non-musical events.
- Expert-level knowledge of audio engineering concepts, maintenance, and operation.
- Ability to interpret stage plots, input lists and other paperwork
- Capable of directing audio crew during setups, rehearsals, and performances
- Ability to serve as and supervise A1 and A2 sound engineer roles
- Lighting
- Basic understanding of concepts and ability to do simple setups
- Video
- Basic understanding of concepts and ability to do simple setups
- Basic levels of knowledge in staging and rigging; counterweight fly system; decking, dance, and production flooring.
- Knowledge of technical function and installation of acoustical shell.
- Basic carpentry/shop equipment operation.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations as they apply to a public assembly venue including OSHA, NFPA, ESTA, NEC, and ATF.
- Ability to interpret technical riders and other technical documents and translate information to provide needs/costs to Assistant Director of Production Services
- Ability to stay calm under pressure, provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional demeanor at all times
- Ability to prioritize high volumes of work, make independent decisions and work on multiple tasks without direct supervision.
- Other Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with DANTE hardware and software
- Experience with QLab and other sound editing software
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required.
Required Qualifications - Minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in related field
- 2-3 years' experience in concert production as a live sound engineer, or equivalent combination of training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications - Over 5 years of experience in concert production as a live sound engineer.
- Experience working with Nexo line array speaker systems and Yamaha digital mixing consoles.
Working Environment 1. Highly physical environment, including lifting, bending and quick movement throughout venue; some office work/meetings.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to loud.
4. Work up high on catwalks and in attics, also around motorized equipment.
Physical Activities 1. Ability to sit in front of a production console or computer for an extended period of time.
2. Frequently required to move about the building/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 50 lbs.
3. Significant physical labor including lifting, pushing/pulling, going up and down stairs/ladders.
Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on non-event weeks. Nights and weekends as needed based on event schedule.

Salary Grade Number: The salary grade for the position is 7.
Hourly Range: The hourly range for the position is $24.52 - $27.08.
