Position Summary
The Student Support Services Professional Tutor (SSST) provides support services for the students in lab, one-on-one, or open classroom settings. Professional Tutor do not deliver instruction; they provide tutorial support for specific content areas and students in accordance with the mission, core values, and purposes of the college. The (SSST) provides tutorial support for program participants and tracks their progress each semester through graduation, providing services that support retention and graduation.
Salary Schedule Placement: Local Salary Schedule $19.76 per hour up to 19 hours per week
This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon funding from the grant. Non-probationary status is not attainable by employment in this position, the funding and duration of which are finite.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides academic assistance to the assigned student, either in a group or individual settingAssists students in achieving a better understanding of a specific subject area and with improving academic capabilities in designated areasAttends periodic training or orientation sessions as required by the faculty or directorProvides evaluations and other reports as requestedDocuments student progressAssists students with the development of study skills necessary for academic successHelps foster positive attitudes toward learning and studyingMotivates and supports students' achievement and success.Establishes and maintains rapport with the assigned student(s).Serves as a role model for students receiving services.Fosters an inclusive learning environment. Ensures successful performance, retention, and graduation of SSS participants.Recruits participants with the potential and motivation for college entry and success. Monitors academic progress and contact faculty and staff throughout the semester as necessary.Upholds professional ethical standards that do not breach confidentiality and student relationships.Maintains an appropriate work schedule to accommodate participants.Maintains a clean, organized, and inviting office environment in which participants feel comfortable.Attends professional development, TRIO workshops, seminars, and conferences.Provides data to the Director when requested and in accordance with program requirementsPerforms other duties as assigned.Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor's degree required in mathematics Master's degree preferred
- Three years of successful teaching experience in mathematics or a related field
- Experience working with disadvantaged students and administering diagnostic tests preferred
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills required; computer proficiency.

Ability to demonstrate flexibility within the work environment.Experience working with first generation, low-income, and/or disabled students.Ability to innovate to meet program goals.Consistently making mature, common sense decisions based on current and/or available knowledge.Strong interpersonal and communications skills.Display a cooperative and approachable attitude and demeanor.Ability to effectively operate and utilize a computer, telephone, photocopier, fax machine, scanner, and internet.Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, SMART Technologies and Blumen System (preferable).Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes nights, as needed, to assist with student tutorial needs.A willingness to take initiative and commitment to a philosophy of continuous improvement.Ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies and procedures; to research and analyze information; and to prepare, present, and review oral and written information and reports. Ability use to customer service initiatives to clients and campus community.
