The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking to hire a Part-Time Basic Needs Counselor for Chabot College in Hayward, CA.

 

Job Summary:

The Student Equity Office (SEO) is charged with meeting students basic needs in support of their educational goal. The Gladiator Resource Hub (GRH), led by the SEO staff, is a one-stop shop for basic needs resources and referrals to on and off campus partners. The GRH includes the FRESH Market, a study area, a student lounge, and a resource desk staffed by student assistants. The SEO provides food, transportation, housing, childcare, and mental health resources to support the academic success of Chabot students. Under the direction of the SEO Director, the Basic Needs Counselor will be primarily responsible for assisting Chabot students by assessing student needs, proving resources to address students needs, and making referral to address students needs beyond the capacity of the SEO.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Basic Needs Support and Retention

1. Assess and counsel students for basic needs and financial coaching support

2. Communicate with on and off campus partners to refer students to relevant resources for students who demonstrate need

3. Maintain participant caseload using integrated case management approaches

4. Maintain complete and up-to-date student files, including required documentation and case/progress notes

5. Facilitate weekly SEO orientations and workshops for interested students

6. Keep up to date on regional basic needs resource trends

 

Customer Service/Communication

7. Advocate on student's behalf to employers, training providers and other program partners as needed

8. Facilitate and coordinate workshops (Resume/ Cover Letter Creation, Interviewing, budgeting, networking, CalFRESH, basic needs, etc.) to all interested students

9. Be sensitive to diverse cultures and people, working with them on their own career tracks

 

Collaboration

10. Work with other staff to create smooth working systems within the SEO and GRH

11. Communicate with on and off campus partners to provide follow up with students and develop additional resources as needed

12. Collaborate with SEO partner organizations, seeking out new partnership when applicable.

13. Facilitate workshops and student contact with partner agencies

14. Make referrals to on and off campus partner as appropriate, including counseling on mental health issues, job readiness workshops, pre-employment training, academic advising, as well as issues involving housing, food, clothing, transportation, financial assistance, etc.

15. Participate in staff meetings and perform any other employment related tasks as identified

 

Knowledge of:

1. Case management/ counseling principles and techniques.

2. College and community based basic needs programs and services.

4. Community college programs, services, and organization.

5. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

6. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

7. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

8. Standard office computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

 

Ability to:

1. Provide basic needs support to the students.

2. Develop and present effective presentations, training, and workshops.

3. Develop flyers and other written material for program needs for recruitment and outreach.

4. Network effectively with on campus and community programs.

5. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

6. Collect data for reporting purposes.

7. Prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.

8. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

9. Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.

10. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

12. Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the varied racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, academic, socio-economic, and disabled populations of community college students.

13. Work independently and as a team.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent

 

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

 

Evidence of understanding of and responsiveness to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. One year of experience in counseling and case management in a higher education setting providing basic needs and/or financial literacy support in a multi-service setting.

2. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations affecting basic needs services.

3. Knowledge of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, basic needs, and equity initiatives.

4. Knowledge of Banner, SARS, Salesforce or similar data base management system.

5. Understand the organization and operation of District and of outside agencies as a necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.

6. Interpret, apply, and explain District Basic Needs policies, regulations, and requirements.

7. Collect and analyze data for reporting purposes.
