Primary Role

Responsible for leading audits by evaluating and assessing American Water's (AW) risks/controls to assure: 1) the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, 2) the reliability of financial reporting, 3) compliance with laws and regulations, and 4) the safeguarding of company assets. Also responsible for assisting with select compliance activities related to the company's code of ethics and direct assistance assignments from external public accounting firm.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead risk-based audits/projects and audit teams on a day- to-day basis ensuring team productivity, quality and timely results. Includes coaching junior team members, coordination, planning, fieldwork, audit/project reports, and issue resolution.
  • Assess risks/controls from an integrated business control framework and collaborate with management to mitigate risks.
  • Supports risk/ control awareness and self-assessment throughout AW.
  • Ensure communication and performance of responsibilities is organized, efficient, proactive, timely, cost effective and professional.
  • Perform substantive testing and financial statement tie outs on behalf and under the direction of AW's external auditors.
  • Support compliance activities related to the company's code of ethics.
  • Pursue and obtain a relevant professional certification.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of audit theory, planning, testing, and reporting concepts.
  • Understanding of process evaluation and review.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision making.
  • Strong analytical, systemic and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and in teams or effectively work independently.
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance evaluation and risks/controls assessment from an integrated business control framework, such as COSO and COBIT (IT governance framework and supporting toolset).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel functionalities (i.e. pivot tables, Vlookup, etc.)
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of ERP, CRM, fixed asset, and financial consolidation systems.
  • Knowledge of control processes/systems in the water utility industry is desired.
  • Prior public accounting, corporate and/or multi-subsidiary company experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of IT auditing concepts and frameworks a plus.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting or finance required.
  • Minimum of 6 years overall business experience, of which a minimum of 3 years within audit related fields is required; business experience exposure consists of varied positions and experience.
  • Analyzing people, processes, and risk at the business unit and functional level is required.
  • Executing audit engagements and advisory projects required, with IT audit experience a plus.
  • Sarbanes-Oxley experience desired.
  • Working in a team-based environment is required.
  • ERP/CRM and fixed assets systems such as SAP, Oracle/Hyperion, and PowerPlan is a plus.
  • AuditBoard software is a plus.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 5% travel throughout the United States

Certifications & Licenses

  • At least one of the following certifications & licenses (and/or equivalent) is desired: CPA, CIA, CISA, and/or CFE

Work Environment

  • Hybrid, in Camden, NJ office 3 days a week
