Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Director of the R&D Operations team, the R&D Senior Manager will be responsible for developing and managing a world class R&D Lab organization that is accountable for lab & testing activities for the global AAD and PIVC MDS platforms. This position and team will provide technical, test method development, and testing support for multiple product development groups & projects including new product development, cost improvement, manufacturing support, and sustaining engineering.

Reporting to the Director of the R&D Operations team, the R&D Senior Manager will be responsible for developing and managing a world class R&D Lab organization that is accountable for lab & testing activities for the global AAD and PIVC MDS platforms. The successful candidate will foster technical excellence & innovation in the lab team, will create robust equipment plans & lab testing strategies, will align to business priorities, will be anchored in BD Excellence & continuous improvement, and will develop an effective and motivated staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Organizes and coordinates all activities related to BD test labs supporting the AAD & PIVC platforms & MDS business.
  • Provides R&D technical & product development expertise to the lab team and the broader organization.
  • Develops lab strategies across multiple sites and optimizes lab footprint, including offshore locations.
  • Performs managerial responsibilities for assigned team members (including offshore team members), which may include career development guidance, performance reviews, role selection, promotion, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Works with product development teams in creation, prioritization, & support of R&D goals.
  • Creates, tracks, and meets project schedules, resource demands, and budgets
  • Implements department and division procedures and policies relating to all aspects of the product development groups and technology teams.
  • Assesses priorities and makes assignments to assure project and BD priorities are met.
  • Develops, with divisional managers, a strategic direction for product development groups and communicates vision to technology teams.
  • Assures compliance with corporate and divisional procedures, policies, and government regulations.
  • Coordinates with team members and outside professionals to assure product designs and processes meet users needs, as well as all applicable FDA requirements.
  • Coordinates resource allocation and balancing for technology teams. Hires and develops staff in technical roles.
  • Identifies development needs and potential for team members and provides/recommends project assignments and training to increase expertise to meet current or future business needs.
  • Develops the performance standards and the norms of the product development teams and assures team communication with platform management.
  • Provides timely information to business management on issues which will affect the platform's performance.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field plus ten (10) years' experience OR equivalency in the medical device or closely related industry.
  • Excellent working knowledge of product development, design controls, test method development & validation, manufacturing, finance, administration, and knowledge of clinical requirements for medical devices.
  • Demonstrated positive communication and human relation skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years' experience in project management and,
  • Four (4) years' experience in a direct supervisory/management role.


The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the responsibilities.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to concurrently handle a variety of projects and coordinate the efforts of multiple team members across the organization.
  • Ability to independently build relationships and work with functions outside of R&D, including outside suppliers, contractors, technical professionals, and consultants.
  • Skills in communicating with all levels of technical and operating management (both written and oral presentation skills).
  • Ability to analyze and use technical data and resources.
  • Knowledge of the clinical environment of the products & projects assigned to the team.
  • Leadership, decision making, and project management skills.
  • Ability to understand all dimensions of customer requirements.
  • Knowledge of Business Management skills in the areas of finance, capitalization, business planning, regulatory and product development.


Physical Demands:

This position is in an office and laboratory environment and requires the incumbent to sit, stand and perform general office functions. The incumbent may also be required to lift up-to twenty-five pounds occasionally. The incumbent may be required to stand for long periods. Bending, stooping, and reaching are also frequently required.

Work Environment:

Onsite a minimum of four days a week, may include some remote or hybrid work.
