About the Department:

Founded in 1969, the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU is one of the foremost arts education institutions in the United States. Them Meadows School offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in advertising, art, art history, arts management and arts entrepreneurship, creative computation, music, theatre, dance, film and media arts, public affairs & corporate communication, journalism and fashion journalism. The goal of the Meadows School of the Arts, as a comprehensive educational institution, is to prepare students to meet the demands of professional careers. The Meadows School is a leader in developing innovative outreach and community engagement programs, challenging its students to make a difference locally and globally by developing vital connections between art, entrepreneurship and change. The Meadows School of the Arts is also a convener for the arts in North Texas, serving as a catalyst for new collaborations and providing critical industry research.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The growing and vibrant division of journalism of the Meadows School of the Arts seeks a Student Media Lab Manager to lead, mentor, and develop student work across a range of platforms, skills, and content interests. The new role not only works to support the faculty and students who produce The Daily Campus, SMU-TV, and SMU Look Media but also to serve in a leadership capacity for special, division-wide projects, professional development programming for students, student awards, and the launch of new certificate and training programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Support student reporting and content creation, including stories told with texts, audio, video, still photography and social media, in preparation for publication on the range of student-media platforms.
  • Work with student media professors/advisors as they prepare and train student leaders to produce content for student media - including The Daily Campus, SMU-TV and SMU Look.
  • Develop and coordinate workshops and educational development opportunities for students and for faculty - which could include travel. Develop certificate programs and summer programs for media professionals and high-school students.
  • Coordinate submission of student work for national, regional, and state student-media competitions and pursue other opportunities to recognize student work. Coordinate the identification and submission of student work for recognition.
  • Support the creation and execution of the new student-lab requirement as part of the new curriculum.
  • Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required for productions and special events.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communication is required.

A minimum of 4 (four) years of journalism and/or media experience is required. Experience working with audio and video editing, photography, social media and audience engagement is highly preferred. Experience working in a television studio is also a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must be proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud (Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and After Effects).

Candidate familiarity with social media marketing tools like Hootsuite or similar is essential.
