This is what you will do:
At Alexion, we investigate rare diseases and work in a collaborative and cutting edge environment to deliver breakthrough medicines for rare disease patients. In Research, our role is to identify and validate targets that are implicated in disease pathology using multiple experimental approaches such as; phenotypic screening, cell line engineering and utilizing bioinformatics to make informed decisions about the development of therapeutics.
We are seeking a summer research intern to join our Cell Sciences/High Throughput Biology lab. The candidate will be lab-based and conduct assay development experiments to support target ID, validation and in-vitro disease modeling. The candidate will learn high-quality research techniques and contribute to the successful evaluation of pipeline targets that will ultimately transform patients lives.
You will be responsible for:
- Performng activities and lab experiments, include but are not limited to:
- Literature review, experimental design and execution
- Culturing primary and immortalized cell lines
- Assay development and optimization
- Phenotypic screening
- Data analysis using advanced computational and visualization software
- Adhering to experimental protocols to execute experiments and work closely with scientists from cross-functional teams
- Presenting results at group meetings, as well as document experiments in electronic laboratory notebook system.
You will need to have:Qualifications and Skills
- Education:
- Pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. in Molecular or Cellular Biology or a related scientific field.
- The duties of this role are generally conducted in laboratory and office environment. As is typical of a laboratory-based role, the incumbent must be able, with or without an accommodation to: use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours
- Experience:
- At least 2 years of experience in a research lab
- Technical Skills:
- Hands-on experience in cell culture for both primary and immortalized cell lines
- Willingness to program and/or work with automated instrumentation.
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel/Xlfit data analysis.
- Soft Skills:
- Highly organized with exceptional adherence to protocols.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong observation and documentation skills.
- Multitask experiments and projects
- Strong collaborative work ethic
- Standards and Practices:
- Maintain housekeeping, safety, and environmental standards in accordance with Alexion/Astra Zeneca guidelines.
We would prefer for you to have:
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Microscopy experience
