The Division of Campus Safety seeks internal and external partnerships to promote and maintain a safe, secure environment conducive to learning, living and working at the University of Denver. The Division of Campus Safety is responsible for 24 hour-7 day a week safety patrol operations and parking management for the University.

Position Summary

A uniformed position that coordinates and delivers a broad range of crime prevention and training programming, marketing of the Campus Safety department, as well as coordination of internal staff training. This position also is the primary coordinator for the department's social media program. Provides analysis of criminal activity and develops prevention strategies based on findings. Occasionally, is required to assume the responsibility of a field- based officer/supervisor to cover a shift.

Essential Functions

  • As part of the training function, manage the document management system (PowerDMS), build online courses, assign those courses to officers, design tests/quizzes online and analyze officers scores.
  • Develop and manage cohesive training programs that have a consistent, branded look and feel while collaborating with the Training Committee.
  • Schedule all internal trainings and handle external requests for classes (RAD, First Aid, etc.) includes the assignment of class instructors, test development, test results analysis
  • Trains Campus Safety staff in various crime prevention and awareness techniques and skills and other skills and abilities required to fulfill their job requirements.
  • As part of the training function, this position may also help the Manager of Emergency Preparedness and Fire Safety by designing, implementing, managing and analyzing emergency drills and exercises (both table-top and live/in the field)
  • Manage social media outlets for the Division includes pre-scheduling social media posts, taking photos for social media, responding to questions from the public, Division marketing initiatives, event postings and special campaign management. Trains the Communication Technicians on posting timely information for the DU Community
  • Researches new training opportunities for patrol officers, new social media platforms, and seeks out opportunities for community partnership.
  • Participates in the development of After-Action Plans / Incident Debrief analysis by reviewing dispatch entries, interviewing participants, listening to recordings, etc. and creates/updates training based upon findings 5%
  • Provides input and guidance on strategic inititiatives relating to Patrol, community outreach and marketing initiatives 25%
  • Sets up and hosts quarterly community forums
  • Provides guidance to the CRO on best strategies for community outreach and effective ways for officers to liaison with groups on campus
  • Proposes new and innovative ways to patrol, provides outreach and market to the DU Community
  • Develops new training for the DU Community and then trains the CRO to provide that training
  • Acts as the back up Community Resource Officer and helps the CRO to execute community outreach programming
  • Helps the Commander with recruiting efforts
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages as well as to create and interpret graphical charts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic, graphical, or numerical form.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that requires individual thought and initiative.
  • Capable of facilitating the interactions and diverse needs of a complex organization.
  • Ability to maintain professional standards of conduct during stressful and oftentimes emotional situations.
  • Ability to deliver and follow detailed instructions.
Required Qualifications
  • Associates Degree or equivalent with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science or Security Management from a two-year college or technical school. Previous law enforcement recruit school is desirable.
  • Must able to obtain City and County of Denver Merchant Guard and Central Alarm Operator Licenses
  • Must successfully complete and maintain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR, Defensive Driving and PPCT. Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license and be insurable under University guidelines. Must pass a complete background check with a clear record, no criminal record or felony convictions. Must maintain physical fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments.
  • One to two years related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous law enforcement training and/or POST certification is desirable.
Working Environment

This position primarily works in an office or classroom-type setting. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. As needed this position will work outside in all weather conditions. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as is deemed necessary by the Captain or members of the department's senior management group. May be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Physical Activities

It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety that all uniformed officers maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job related tasks that they may be called upon to do in the performance of their duties. In accordance with the policy, a job related physical, drug screen and physical assessment test administered by a University approved physician will be completed upon acceptance of employment with the department. It is the responsibility of the officer to remain in such physical condition that they can successfully complete the test at any time.

Must be able to run 100 yards, climb four flights of stairs, drag a 110 pound drag dummy fifteen feet, descend four flights of stairs and run 100 yards in a time frame established by the department. Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and run, climb stairs and must routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds. During emergencies this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances. Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as is deemed necessary by the Captain or members of the department's senior management group. May be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $31.13-$35.93.
