Description The University Controller is a full-time administrative position, reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Finance & CFO. The position serves as the chief accountant for the University and is responsible for the leadership and management oversight of accounting and the financial internal controls of the University. The University Controller directs, coordinates, and oversees the institution's various financial and accounting operations. This role establishes University financial policies and transactional standards, ensuring consistency with the University's mission and strategic plans and compliance with the Board of Trustees policies, State and Federal fiscal management laws and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSI­­BILITIES
    Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions including unrestricted, temporarily restricted and permanently restricted funds.Maintain the University's books and fiscal records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as they apply to private, non-profit educational institutions.Recommends to the VP for Administration and Finance & CFO appropriate changes relating to the University's books and records; provide technical accounting guidance and best practices.Establish, monitor and enforce adequate internal controls to safeguard the University's assets.Ensure that restricted funds are properly recorded, and satisfaction of donor restrictions is appropriately documented - working closely with the Advancement Department.Oversee and coordinate with regulatory and independent auditors examining the University's financial record and implement recommendations.Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and year end regulatory filings - included but not limited to the 5500s', 990, 990T, 199, 550, 571L, 1099s', unclaimed property, and EZ Audit.Ensure that required financial reports are properly filed with regulatory agencies and outside sponsors (i.e., EZ Audit).Drawdown and secure appropriate funds from the United States Department of Education for federal programs; deposit funds in a timely manner.Monitor the University's cash flow and investments, working with the VP for Administration and Finance & CFO to ensure adequate liquidity is available to meet the University's obligations.Supervise, train, and develop the accounting team.Ensures orderly, timely, and accurate processing of transactions and closing the general ledger.Plans, oversees, and directs the accounting and financial functions of the University including general accounting, cash management, debt compliance, endowments, accounts payable, procurement, fixed assets, investments, grants, and finance systems management.Oversee payroll processing for employees and students, including payroll tax filings, and maintenance of the payroll system - working closely with Human Resources.Establish, maintain, and enhance changes to the University's Accounting and Financial reporting systems, including the University Chart of Accounts.Serve as co-administrator to the budget and financial reporting software system.Evaluates the impact of proposed regulatory action or changes to accounting standards.Primary responsibility for the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of appropriate accounting systems, policies, and procedures, including the Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual.Monitor and update the University's Accounting Portal and its contents.Designs and develops appropriate forms and procedures to enhance fiscal controls.Participates in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of University accounting and finance software.Participates in professional development to maintain current knowledge and skills in all areas of responsibility.Completes other related responsibilities as may be assigned by the VP for Administration and Finance & CFO, or President.

Possess excellent problem solving, analytical, and business skills.Technical fluency and adaptability with accounting systems and possess a strong understanding of the use of potential of technology in the area of financial management.Ability to convey complex accounting information in a concise and easily understood manner.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Professional Suite.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, or related field from an accredited College or University; master's degree in accounting, MBA, or CPA preferred.
  • A minimum of eight years related accounting experience, including three years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience working in higher education and nonprofits preferred.
