Hiring Range: This position's hiring range is anticipated to be $23 to $25 per hour, depending on experience, plus great benefits!

Interviews will occur weekly until the position is filled.

Manager interviews will occur the week of 01/06/2025 (recruiter phone screens will occur prior to this week.

Position Summary:

The Veterinary Technician for the mobile clinic provides high quality medical care for animals in Best Friends outreach and veterinary programs. Responsible for providing medical and operational support to the outreach program; acting with urgency to accomplish important tasks, making on the spot decisions, and playing a direct role in achieving Best Friends Animal Society's No Kill mission and organizational success.

The Best Friends Sanctuary Outreach team provides hands on support to Navajo Nation animal control shelters and community members who love their pets. Not only do we support the animals who find themselves in shelters by providing transport to other rescue organizations, we also provide support directly to the community through mobile and MASH style spay, neuter, and wellness clinics.

In this role you will participate in our once a month spay, neuter, and wellness clinics in the Western Agency of the Navajo Nation, where you will administer vaccinations and treatments, work in surgery, provide recovery for animal's post-surgery, and more. You will be part of a team implementing strategies to increase the community's access to veterinary care and reduce the number of pets and strays that end up in the shelter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for the Sanctuary Outreach mobile spay and neuter clinic including but not limited to check-in and discharge, induction, surgery, recovery, wellness, animal care, resupply processes, maintaining mobile unit and medical equipment, record keeping, and providing high quality client services.
  • Perform basic medical care including but not limited to intravenous injections, blood draws, medicating, vaccinating, subcutaneous fluids, catheter placement, microchipping, and wound care under the direction of a veterinarian; have a comprehensive knowledge of sterile techniques, basic knowledge of surgical instruments, and general pharmacology, anesthesia monitoring, surgical induction and recovery; skilled understanding of humane restraint for medical procedures and emergency stabilization procedures. Maintain a clean and disinfected work environment, maintain controlled substance logs, accurately record patient and client medical data. Communicate professionally with clients and colleagues.
  • Direct, empower, and enable volunteers to support the Sanctuary Outreach mobile clinic with the goal of utilizing volunteers to the greatest extent possible to expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity; deliver and lead superior customer service.
  • Work collaboratively with and assist Best Friends' team members in all areas of operations to develop, evolve, and implement efficient processes to achieve lifesaving goals; follow policies, procedures, and task lists, including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.

Skills and Experience:
  • A minimum of 1-year prior experience working as a Veterinary Technician, working in a Veterinary clinic and or high volume spay/neuter clinic, or relevant education and or certifications
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act independently and decisively in difficult and changing situations, and to identify and escalate critical issues as necessary.
  • Prior work and/or volunteer experience within the Navajo Nation preferred.
    Ability to communicate effectively in Navajo/Diné a plus. .
  • Experience and skilled in starting and maintaining effective relationships with customers, clients, partners and fellow staff.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; ability to adapt to new situations or processes; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations; positive
    attitude, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organizational skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands; with accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills; and strong listening skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, and veterinary software with the ability to learn and use new applications quickly.
  • Travel to various communities within the Navajo Nation is expected.
Physical Requirements:
  • Routinely lift and handle animals of varying sizes and species and perform strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • This position will require reliable transportation for travel to and from clinic events.
  • Exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
  • Valid driver's license, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
  • Work hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department, including weekends, holidays and on-call work.
