Biopharmaceuticals Clinical Operations
BioPharmaceuticals Clinical Operations is a diverse, international team focused on the end-to-end planning and delivery of patient-centric clinical trial programs and studies that generate clinical evidence, enabling submissions for the AstraZeneca portfolio.
We work throughout the clinical lifecycle and tap into our expertise to design and deliver sustainable trials with short clinical cycle times and an excellent patient experience.
We also provide expert services to research & development teams in data and digital, clinical process and quality and alliance management. In addition, we run large scale transformation projects that improve our capabilities and efficiency in conducting clinical trial programs.

VP, Global Head of Clinical Data & Insights
The Global Head, Data Science & Insights (CDI) drives the strategy and long-term vision for Clinical and Operational Data across the AstraZeneca enterprise. Developing a team that leads delivery of the clinical and operational data components of the portfolio, from protocol to analysis and reporting for the entire AstraZeneca organisation. Enabling quality data used in submissions, publications and regulatory engagements, whilst ensuring license to operate.
As a member of the Biopharmaceuticals Clinical Operations Leadership Team, this role guides and influences the strategic direction and priorities of the function and partners closely with the Oncology Research & Development organisation which is directly supported. The Head of CDS develops the Clinical and Operational Data strategy for the AstraZeneca organisation, influences and advances ways of working to increase levels of standardisation, reduce time and effort and enable pro-active decision making, through data derived insights at the Portfolio, Project and Study level whilst keeping a key focus on sustainability.
The Global Head, CDI maintains an awareness of industry changes and challenges and has the ability to translate these so that Clinical Operations groups and CDI can adapt and ensure AstraZeneca is amongst the industry leaders.
The Global Head of CDI sponsors and ensures the on-time delivery of pivotal initiatives that have significant levels of business, technical and process change across the organisation.
Accountabilities:
- Ensure the on-time delivery of the AstraZeneca portfolio. Understanding the company priorities and balancing the needs of Early and Late, Biopharma and Oncology
- Develop and implement ground-breaking ways of working to ensure internal and external delivery is optimised
- Leadership, recruitment and development of staff globally, and succession planning in multiple geographies across the many disciplines that make up Clinical Data and insights
- Build strong relationships with partners, influence and collaborate effectively across SET areas
- Ensure the balance of internal and external expertise to secure availability of the right people at the right time to support the development of AstraZeneca's dynamic pipeline
- Strategic leadership of the development and maintenance of data delivery models/options, balancing customer needs and efficiency and be an interface for internal or external Partners
- Drive an environment of global standardization, continuous improvement and productivity gains
- Drive innovation to support portfolio delivery including capability builds
- Lead and support change
- Develop, coach, mentor, motivate and inspire individuals within the organization and attract, recruit & retain top talent
- Strategic workforce planning and capability build for current and emerging needs within CDI
- Lead or participate in critical initiatives as needed, partnering with functional leaders across the business ensuring high quality contribution and readiness for implementation. The scope of the initiative should have significant impact across the Clinical Operations organization, TA or R&D
- Participate in industry forums to drive and shape future ways of working
- Delivery of agreed departmental activities within budgeted target
- Ensure compliance to ethics, policies and standard procedures
Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor or Masters Degree in Biological Sciences, Data in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Biology, life science) or equivalent
- Extensive pharmaceutical and / or CRO industry experience with broad experience in one or more of the domains of CDI
- Problem solving ability to resolve conflict and deal with a wide range of complex problems independently and through others.
- Strong technical expertise
- Innovative mindset, ability to think beyond traditional ways of working, influence and inspire change
- Highly developed analytical skills, conceptual thinking and integrative vision required to drive customer needs, business performance and risk management.
- Strong ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical members of the organisation.
- Thorough knowledge of clinical development process, industry standards and resource needed to manage trials of differing complexities
- Tried ability to influence relevant stakeholders and global teams, including SET level
- Proven experience of successfully leading global teams
- - Extensive experience in working successfully with external partners at senior levels in their respective organisations
- Leads change with a positive approach for self, team and the business. Sees change as an opportunity to improve performance and contribute to the business
- Demonstrated global and inclusive line management, development and mentorship of others, identifying and providing opportunities to improve the capabilities of other people
- Demonstrated ability to set and handle priorities, resources, performance targets and project initiatives in a global environment

- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Knowledge and enterprise experience leading multiple Clinical Operations domains.
- Experience implementing business processes and managing functional budgets
